“What time is it in Sydney right now?” In kNOW! by Ravensburger, that is a real quiz question, and the right answer changes every minute. The game asks questions about time, place and weather that can only be solved with live data. We built the digital side of it: first as a voice application for the Google Assistant, today as a dedicated app for iOS and Android.
Ravensburger wanted a game that always stays current and can take on new game mechanics at any time. Our answer in 2018 was a combination of a CMS and an Action on Google that serves questions and game mechanics in different languages. We also created a character for it: “Professor kNOW” explains the rules and sets the tasks for each game.
Then Google announced that all Conversational Actions would be shut down in 2023. For a game built on the Assistant, that was a real challenge. So we gave kNOW! its own app, which covers every game category and integrates the Google Assistant directly. Questions that depend on today’s date or your location, such as “How far is it from here to Honolulu?”, are still part of the game.
At the table, the smartphone now sits right between the cards and the playing pieces. The app guides players through every category, starts the timer for each round and offers hints for the individual games. We designed and developed it ourselves, including the backend and CMS the editorial team uses to manage the question catalogue.
